Developmental Domains and Intended Outcomes
At SBHL, we practice a holistic developmental approach. Our 8 developmental domains allow us to assess the risk and needs of our residents.Â
- Prior and Current Offences
- Family Circumstances/Parenting
- Education/Employment
- Peer Relations
- Substance Abuse
- Leisure/Recreation
- Personality/Behaviour
- Attitudes/Orientation
At SBHL, we encourage youths to adapt a more prosocial and positive set of values and belief system.
To build good relationship and support, every resident is assigned a Life Coach and a Youth Worker. SBHL also invites guest speakers from different industries to inspire and introduce career prospects to the residents.
SBHL residents are allocated Life Groups where they set goals and work together to achieve them. This helps the youth to assimilate into the community.
Through art and sports programmes, all residents are also exposed to new social circles, encouraging them to maintain positive influences in their lives.
It is important for residents to be meaningfully engaged. Having a sense of purpose keeps them away from distractions and prevents them from reoffending.
We work closely with our residents' teachers and/or employers to ensure the youth's progress even when they are outside the institution. support the rehabilitation of the residents. We provide our expertise in dealing with the unique profile of our youth and we help teachers/employers understand our youth better.
We recognise that support from the family is important in the rehabilitation of the residents which is why we aim to strengthen and restore relationships if necessary.
Parents are very involved in the rehabilitation of the resident. They are present during the process of admission, during which, the resident’s Life Coach is introduced and communication is established immediately. They are required in meetings with school teachers so that they are updated about their son’s academic progress. The residents also represent SBHL in sports events and stage performances where parents are encouraged to join in and support.
Twice a year, we host the SBHL Parents’ Night. Aside from updating the parents on what was achieved by the residents over the past 6 months, our main objective is for the families to reconnect and recommit to each other.
Our Approaches
To ensure that our residents get the best from our time with them,
we uphold a set of approaches and values across our entire division.
Restorative Practice involves trust and good relationship between either the youth workers or life coaches and the residents. We want to create an environment that is non threatening that encourages the residents to communicate. This allows the youth workers/coaches to assess and understand the needs of the youths.
Constructive engagement refers to a positive and meaningful way of spending time.Â
We realize that offences are committed when the mind is idle or does not have a greater purpose for life. Hence, we aim to give them a new goal or purpose to prevent the residents from reoffending.
To successfully reintegrate a youth back into society, it takes more than the youth himself. Every offender needs the help of his family, his teachers or employers, friends from the neighbourhood and friends from interest groups. We introduce the residents to these people to ensure the smooth transition from the institution back to society.
