Can Counselling Help Youths Find Happiness?

In recent years, mental health concerns among young people are on the rise–from negative self-image and relationship stress, to anxiety and depression. Accumulated over time, such concerns can cause a negative impact on a youth’s development, quality of life, and overall happiness. According to IMH’s study in 2016, 1 out 7 individuals have experienced mental disorder. However, majority did not seek professional help. How then can counselling help youths struggling with mental health issues find happiness in their lives?

Seeking help in pursuit of happiness

Having a professional to guide and help young people navigate their mental health will allow youths to learn more about themselves and be prepared in coping with their struggles. Some problems are difficult to deal with alone and a counsellor can help them process those thoughts and regulate their emotionssubsequently providing new insights and growth.

Intervention for youths with mental health symptoms

Trybe’s Project ANCHOR is a counselling service for young people struggling with mental health issues. It aims to strengthen their connection with self and others while setting realistic goals in their life.

This service also offers support for the youth’s parents and/or caregivers. Through counselling, the youth and their caregivers can learn more about themselves and understand their struggles better. Counselling can better equip young people with coping mechanisms and inform caregivers of the type of support they can give.

Project ANCHOR also helps youths connect with reality so they can develop acceptance over circumstances which are beyond their control.

With guidance and concrete intervention plan, youths will learn how to face adversities. Subsequently, their mental resilience will be beneficial as they transition into adulthood. Thus, seeking help through counselling is not a sign of weakness, but a step towards a happier life.
